Bimbilla SHS Student Killed by Stray Bullet During Fire Festival Procession

Tragedy struck in Bimbilla during this year’s Fire Festival celebrations as a student of Bimbilla Senior High School was reportedly killed by a stray bullet during a street procession on Saturday night.
The victim, identified as a male student, was said to be watching the traditional procession when a gun was fired—believed to be part of the celebratory rituals—resulting in a stray bullet hitting him fatally. According to eyewitnesses, the student collapsed instantly after being struck, and emergency help arrived too late.
The Fire Festival, locally known as “Bugum Chugu,” is widely celebrated in the Northern Region with night-time torch processions and gun firing, symbolizing historical traditions. However, recent celebrations have raised concerns over the misuse of live ammunition and crowd safety.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. The Nanumba North Municipal Police Command confirmed the incident and assured the public that efforts are underway to identify and prosecute those responsible for the reckless shooting.
School authorities and local leaders have expressed deep sorrow and called for reforms in how the festival is celebrated, especially around schools and residential areas.
