12-Year-Old Boy Found Dead After Being Swept Away by Floodwaters in Kasoa
Tragedy has struck the Kasoa American Town community in the Awutu Senya East Municipality after the body of a 12-year-old boy, identified as David, was found four days after being swept away by floodwaters following heavy rains.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, when David attempted to retrieve his slippers that had fallen into a gutter near the swollen Okrudu River after a downpour. Eyewitnesses say the young boy lost his footing and was quickly carried away by the strong currents before onlookers could rescue him.
Following his disappearance, residents, local authorities, and traditional leaders organized a frantic search operation that lasted for several days. Despite their best efforts, the boy remained missing until Saturday, October 11, when his body was discovered in Fijai, a community within the Gomoa East District.
Confirming the recovery, the Assembly Member for the Kasoa American Town Electoral Area, Hon. Shadrach Boakye Yiadom, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident. He extended his condolences to the bereaved family and called for urgent steps to address the poor drainage systems and open waterways that continue to endanger lives in the area.
“This is not the first time such a tragedy has happened here. The assembly must act swiftly to construct proper drainage systems to prevent future occurrences,” he lamented.
Traditional leaders in the community, including the Ewe Chief of American Town, Togbui Amamasor, also described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that residents could only watch helplessly as the river’s current swept the boy away. The chief further revealed that purification rites are being performed to bring closure to the family and restore calm to the community.
The unfortunate incident has reignited discussions on the need for effective flood control measures in Kasoa and other flood-prone areas across the country. Residents have urged municipal authorities to desilt drains regularly and implement safety campaigns to protect children, especially during the rainy season.
The late David’s body has since been taken to the mortuary, awaiting final arrangements by his family.
