German Nurse Gets Life Sentence for Murdering 10 Patients with Lethal Injections to Ease Night-Shift Workload

In a chilling case that has shocked Germany, a palliative care nurse has been handed a life imprisonment sentence following his conviction for the murder of 10 patients and the attempted murder of 27 additional individuals at a hospital in the western town of Wuerselen.

The perpetrator, whose identity has been withheld from public disclosure under German privacy laws, was found guilty by a court in Aachen of systematically injecting his predominantly elderly patients with excessive doses of painkillers and sedatives. Prosecutors argued that his primary motive was to lighten his workload during grueling overnight shifts, effectively playing “master of life and death” over vulnerable individuals who required intensive care.

The series of crimes unfolded over a six-month period spanning December 2023 to May 2024 at the Wuerselen hospital, where the nurse had been employed since 2020. He originally qualified as a nursing professional back in 2007 before taking up his role at the facility.

During the trial, evidence revealed that the defendant displayed marked “irritation” and a profound lack of empathy toward patients needing elevated levels of attention. To evade these responsibilities, he administered large quantities of morphine and midazolam—a powerful sedative—causing fatal overdoses in 10 cases and near-fatal outcomes in 27 others.

The nurse was taken into custody in 2024 after suspicions were raised by colleagues and hospital records. Upon delivering the verdict, the presiding judges emphasized the “particular severity of guilt” attached to his actions, a designation that effectively blocks any possibility of early release after the standard 15-year minimum term for life sentences in Germany.

Although the convicted man retains the right to appeal the ruling, authorities have indicated that the case remains far from closed. Investigators are actively examining numerous other suspicious deaths and incidents throughout his career. According to reports from Agence France-Presse (AFP), exhumations of additional bodies are currently underway to determine whether more victims can be linked to his actions, potentially leading to fresh charges and another trial.

This harrowing episode draws inevitable parallels to one of the darkest chapters in German medical history: the case of former nurse Niels Högel. In 2019, Högel received a life sentence after being convicted of murdering 85 patients across two hospitals in northern Germany between 1999 and 2005. Like the Wuerselen nurse, Högel deliberately administered lethal doses of heart medication to his victims. He is widely regarded as the most prolific serial killer in the nation’s modern era.

The Wuerselen convictions have reignited national debates about oversight in healthcare settings, patient safety during night shifts, and the psychological screening of medical staff entrusted with end-of-life care. As further investigations continue, the full extent of the nurse’s actions—and the number of lives irrevocably altered or lost—may yet grow even more staggering.
