KNUST Issues Official ID Cards to Campus Cats in Whimsical Welfare Initiative
In a delightful blend of whimsy and environmental stewardship, the University Relations Office (URO) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in partnership with the Quality Assurance and Planning Office (QAPO), has unveiled the Campus Cat Identity Initiative. This program recognizes and advances the welfare of the university’s longstanding resident cats, which have become an integral part of campus life.
The rollout begins with official identification cards issued to two prominent cats, Kwasi Joe and Kofi Sam, who make their home in the Main Administration enclave. These cards designate the cats as “University Cats” and include their names, assigned campus locations, care zones, and a symbolic validity period.
This effort underscores KNUST’s commitment to fostering humane animal-campus relations, supporting environmental health, and preserving the institution’s distinctive cultural identity. Campus cats have historically contributed by controlling pests, creating a serene atmosphere, and providing companionship to students and staff.
Complementing the ID cards, the initiative establishes a community-supported schedule for feeding and veterinary care, managed by the URO and dedicated staff volunteers. The program will expand in phases across designated cat zones, incorporating regular health checks, fixed feeding stations, and educational campaigns to promote positive human-animal interactions.
