Ofankor ‘Wife-Beater’ and Siblings Arrested After Viral Assault Video

In a significant development amid widespread public condemnation, the Ghana Police Service has effected the arrest of a man who was captured in a disturbing viral video brutally assaulting a woman, widely believed to be his spouse, inside their private residence in Ofankor, within the Ga East Municipality.

The arrest was officially confirmed in a detailed press statement released by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. The statement, which was duly signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo on behalf of the Director-General of the CID, provided a comprehensive account of the incident and the subsequent police intervention.

According to the CID’s account, the prime suspect, identified as John Odartey Lamptey, was apprehended on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the couple’s family home in Ofankor. The arrest came swiftly in response to intense public outrage that erupted across social media platforms following the circulation of the harrowing video on Facebook, which depicted the suspect repeatedly striking and manhandling the woman in a manner that shocked the nation.

In a related development, police officers who executed the operation also arrested two siblings of the main suspect, Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey, after they allegedly attempted to assault a female tenant residing on the same premises. The tenant had come under suspicion by the family for secretly recording the assault and subsequently leaking the footage online, thereby triggering the viral backlash. During the police intervention, officers successfully rescued the tenant and ensured her immediate safety, preventing any further harm.

Authorities have disclosed that the victim herself managed to flee the residence prior to the arrival of law enforcement personnel. Intensive efforts are currently underway by the Police Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in collaboration with other units to trace her whereabouts, provide her with necessary protection, medical care, and psycho-social support, and encourage her to formally assist with the ongoing investigation.

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on gender-based violence, the Ghana Police Service, through the CID statement, reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding victims of domestic abuse and ensuring that all perpetrators are promptly brought to justice and made to face the full rigours of the law.

The release of the video ignited a firestorm of anger and sorrow across Ghana, with thousands of citizens, activists, women’s rights organisations, and public figures taking to various online platforms to condemn the act in the strongest terms. Many demanded not only the immediate arrest of the perpetrator but also broader systemic reforms to strengthen legal protections and support mechanisms for survivors of domestic violence in the country.

As investigations continue, the case has once again brought the pervasive issue of domestic abuse into sharp national focus, underscoring the urgent need for collective action to eradicate such violence from homes and communities across Ghana.
