15 Members of Obogu Saviour Church Perish in Gory Accident on Accra-Kumasi Highway
A devastating accident on the Juaso-Nkawkaw stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway has claimed the lives of 15 members of the Obogu Saviour Church Youth Ministry, leaving four others with serious injuries. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Monday, July 28, 2025, and involved a fuel tanker and a Ford Transit bus that was transporting the church members.
According to eyewitnesses, a tyre of the fuel tanker, which was heading towards Accra from Kumasi, burst while overtaking a vehicle ahead of it, causing the vehicle to swerve off its lane and collide head-on with the Ford Transit bus traveling in the opposite direction.
Confirming the tragedy, church elder Kofi Baah told the media that the group were returning to Obogu after participating in a church program in Osiem, Eastern Region, on Friday, but fate had a different plan in store for them. “We were home when we received a distress call about the accident involving members of our youth ministry. We rushed to Juaso Hospital only to witness this mass casualty. While some parents lost two children, some have lost three of their children,” Mr. Baah recounted in deep sorrow. He added that 15 bodies are currently at the mortuary, while four critically injured individuals are receiving treatment at the Emergency Unit. Tragically, the Head Pastor of the Church in Obogu has lost two children in the accident.
The aftermath of the accident has been nothing short of heartbreaking, with many families grappling with the loss of their loved ones. The victims, aged between 4 and 21 years, were swiftly attended to by emergency response teams from the Juaso Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD), Ambulance Service, and the Ghana National Fire Service from Konongo and Juaso.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue, and the Obogu Township is currently in a state of mourning. Personnel from the MTTD, Ambulance Service, and Ghana National Fire Service responded promptly to the scene to assist with rescue efforts and clear the wreckage.
The accident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many still trying to come to terms with the magnitude of the tragedy. As the community mourns, questions are being raised about road safety and the measures that can be taken to prevent such accidents in the future.
