Brazil Blocks X: Elon Musk’s Free Speech Battle with Supreme Court Judge
In a dramatic turn of events, 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) has been banned in Brazil due to non-compliance with a Supreme Court judge’s deadline to appoint a new legal representative in the country. Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered the “immediate and complete suspension” of the social media platform until all court orders are met and existing fines are paid.
The controversy began in April when the judge suspended dozens of 𝕏 accounts for allegedly spreading disinformation. 𝕏 owner Elon Musk reacted, saying: “Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes.”
With at least 20 million Brazilian users affected, the platform’s closure has sparked a heated debate on free speech and censorship. 𝕏 had previously refused to comply with orders to block accounts accused of disinformation, citing illegal censorship and political motivations.
This latest development is part of an ongoing series of clashes between Musk and global authorities, including the EU and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. As the ban takes effect, Brazilians are left wondering about the implications for their online freedoms.
