Government Begins Paying GHS 1,300 Monthly Allowance to Assembly Members

The Government of Ghana has officially begun disbursing a monthly consolidated allowance of GHS 1,300 to all Assembly Members across the country, as part of efforts to enhance local governance and support grassroots development.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, commenced following the release of GHS 25 million by the Ministry of Finance. Out of this amount, GHS 23.6 million has been disbursed to cover allowances for the months of April and May 2025.

Minister of Local Government, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, announced the development at a press briefing in Accra, highlighting that the payments are part of the government’s “Reset Ghana Agenda” aimed at strengthening local structures and ensuring effective monitoring of government projects at the community level.

“All 9,085 Assembly Members, including elected and appointed members, are now receiving a monthly allowance of GHS 1,300. This is in fulfillment of the government’s commitment to empower local representatives and improve decentralised governance,” the Minister stated.

According to him, the 2025 Budget allocated GHS 100 million to support this programme. He assured that the remaining funds would be released in phases to ensure consistent payment of the allowances in the coming months.

The government believes that providing financial support to Assembly Members will improve oversight responsibilities, enhance transparency in project execution, and promote active participation in local development.

The announcement has been met with approval by several Assembly Members who had long advocated for financial remuneration to support their work, which often involves community engagement, conflict resolution, and project supervision without sufficient logistical support.

This marks a significant shift in local governance financing, as Assembly Members previously operated largely on voluntary service without fixed monthly compensation. The allowance is expected to not only motivate them but also attract more qualified individuals into local governance.

The Ministry has pledged to monitor the implementation closely and work with relevant stakeholders to ensure accountability and effectiveness.
