Government Reveals National Cathedral Though Unfinished, Has Cost Ghana $97 Million; Orders Forensic Audit Into Project
Government has revealed that the stalled National Cathedral project has already cost the country $97 million.
The disclosure was made by Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who added that President John Mahama has ordered a forensic audit into the project. The President has also directed the Attorney-General to terminate all contracts related to the project to prevent further financial losses.
The audit follows a Deloitte report that confirmed the $97 million expenditure but also revealed gaps in the accounting and management of funds under the Cathedral Secretariat.
The project, which began under former President Akufo-Addo, was intended to be a national symbol of faith and unity. However, it has faced widespread criticism over cost, lack of transparency, and stalled construction.
A final decision on the future of the Cathedral will be made after the audit is completed.
