Ghana approves visa waiver agreements with four countries, including Colombia
The Parliament of Ghana has given its approval for the ratification of visa waiver agreements between Ghana and four countries, namely Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Colombia, and the Commonwealth of Dominica. These agreements, applicable to holders of diplomatic, service, and ordinary passports, aim to facilitate smoother travel and enhance cooperation between the nations.
According to the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Committee, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, who presented the report on the floor of the House, the agreements are designed to strengthen multilateral partnerships in critical sectors such as education, energy, trade, tourism, and agriculture. By fostering increased mobility and collaboration, these sectors are expected to reap significant benefits.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, addressed concerns about potential revenue loss, assuring Members of Parliament that the agreements will not have an immediate or direct impact on the country’s finances.
While visa fees may be waived, Mr Ablakwa emphasized that the broader economic benefits of the agreements far outweigh any potential fiscal implications. He further elaborated that the visa waiver initiative is anticipated to boost trade and tourism flows, as well as deepen bilateral cooperation with the partner nations.
Over time, these strengthened relationships are projected to yield long-term socio-economic advantages for Ghana and its partner countries, ultimately contributing to mutual growth and development.
