Why Thomas Partey is likely to miss Ghana’s next World Cup qualifying matches
Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey is likely to miss Ghana’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Mali as he continues to face serious legal challenges in the United Kingdom.
The 32-year-old appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5, 2025, where he was charged with five counts of rape involving two women and one count of sexual assault involving a third. The alleged incidents are reported to have occurred between 2021 and 2022 during his time with Arsenal.

Partey was granted bail under strict conditions, including restrictions on contacting the alleged victims and requirements to notify authorities of any travel or change of address. He is expected to reappear at the Old Bailey on September 2, 2025.
The timing of the case poses a major setback for Ghana. Just two days after Partey’s next court appearance, the Black Stars are scheduled to face Chad on September 4 in N’Djamena, followed by a crucial home tie against Mali on September 8 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Given the proximity of the fixtures to his court date, Partey’s availability remains highly doubtful. Travel restrictions imposed as part of his bail conditions further complicate his chances of joining Otto Addo’s squad.
Ghana currently sits at the top of Group I after six matches and is aiming to secure a fifth consecutive appearance at the FIFA World Cup. Coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad in the coming days, with Partey’s inclusion hanging in the balance.
The midfielder’s absence would be a significant blow to the Black Stars, who rely on his experience and leadership in midfield. However, officials remain cautious as the legal case unfolds, leaving Partey’s international future uncertain.
