Baltasar Engonga Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison, Fined $220,000 for Embezzlement

Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a former senior official in Equatorial Guinea, was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined KSh 28 million ($220,000) on August 27, 2025, following a high-profile embezzlement trial. Engonga, once head of the National Financial Investigation Agency, was convicted of misappropriating substantial state funds intended for professional travel, alongside five other officials. The diverted sums, reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars, were significant for the oil-rich Central African nation.

In November 2024, Engonga’s reputation unraveled when over 300 leaked sex tapes involving him and multiple married women went viral. Some videos, reportedly filmed in his Ministry of Finance office, sparked widespread outrage and social media frenzy, with users creating memes, songs, and a spoof virility drug called “Balthazariem.” The scandal amplified public and official anger, given his prominent role and marital status.

The Bioko Provincial Tribunal’s investigation exposed Engonga’s role in diverting public funds for personal gain, revealing deep corruption. The trial, which scrutinized financial records and witness testimonies, captivated national attention. The guilty verdict marked a dramatic fall for Engonga, once admired for his intellect and political acumen.

The conviction has sparked widespread discussion in Equatorial Guinea about ethics, governance, and accountability. Citizens expressed relief at the accountability of a powerful figure, though Engonga’s reputation, tarnished by both the embezzlement and the scandalous tapes, is irreparable.

The case has also prompted calls for systemic change, with activists and civil society groups urging the government to strengthen anti-corruption measures and improve transparency in public institutions. Some analysts suggest that Engonga’s downfall could serve as a warning to other officials, though entrenched patronage networks in Equatorial Guinea’s government may limit the ruling’s broader impact.
