Airbus Scandal Investigation Concludes: Former President Mahama Cleared
The Office of the Special Prosecution (OSP) has completed its investigation into the Airbus scandal and found no evidence to suggest that former President John Dramani Mahama was involved in bribery. Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyabeng announced the findings at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, August 8, 2024.
The OSP investigated alleged bribery of high-ranking Ghanaian officials by Airbus SE, through intermediaries, in relation to the sale of military transport aircraft to Ghana between 2009 and 2015. Despite identifying Mahama as ‘Government Official 1’ in UK court documents and ‘Individual 1’ in US court filings, the OSP found no evidential basis to suggest his involvement in corrupt activities or receipt of bribes.
Consequently, the OSP has directed the closure of the investigation and will not institute criminal proceedings against any person. The Special Prosecutor has also ordered the rescission of arrest warrants issued for four individuals in connection with the investigation.
