FIFA Slaps Hearts of Oak with Transfer Ban Over Unsettled $150,000 Debt
Accra Hearts of Oak have been handed a major setback after world football governing body FIFA imposed a three-transfer-window ban on the club for failing to settle a long-standing debt.
The sanction, communicated in a letter dated 21 August 2025, follows the Phobians’ inability to pay USD 150,000 owed to their former Technical Director, Rene Hiddink, despite being given a 90-day deadline to do so.
The ruling, referenced under FPSD-17518, restricts Hearts of Oak from registering new players in both domestic and international competitions for the next three registration periods. FIFA has also directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to enforce the ban at the national level until the debt is fully paid.
This development deals a heavy blow to the club’s rebuilding efforts, as Hearts were keen on strengthening their squad ahead of the new season. With the embargo in place, they will now be unable to bring in reinforcements, potentially affecting their competitiveness in the Ghana Premier League and continental campaigns.
The only pathway to lifting the ban is for Hearts of Oak to pay the full amount owed to Hiddink. Failure to comply could result in further disciplinary measures from FIFA.
This is not the first time Hearts of Oak have faced financial disputes of this nature, with the club previously entangled in similar cases involving unsettled obligations to former staff and players.
As things stand, the Phobians will be forced to rely on their existing squad until the debt is cleared, leaving fans anxious about the team’s prospects in the coming seasons.
