Gov’t to Recruit 60,000 Education Sector Workers in 2025 – Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a major recruitment drive by the government to boost the education sector with the employment of 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in 2025.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, the Minister revealed that provisions for this large-scale recruitment have already been captured in the 2025 national budget. According to him, this initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance educational delivery and address workforce gaps in schools across the country.
“Mr Speaker, as I have assured this House, 50,000 teachers will be recruited, along with 10,000 non-teaching staff. Adequate provision was made for this in the 2025 budget,” the Minister stated.
The announcement came in response to concerns raised by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who called for investigations into allegations that some teachers were mishandled during a recent picket at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters.
Minister Iddrisu rejected claims of manhandling, insisting that the government remains committed to addressing all outstanding posting and clearance issues. He referenced an ongoing discussion with one of the affected teachers, Bafour Eric, noting that financial clearance for recruitment was issued in May. However, the process faced delays, leading to an expiration of the clearance by December 31.
“Recruitment was scheduled to begin in August, but teachers resumed in September. The clearance expired at the end of the year, so we are currently awaiting renewed clearance to proceed,” he explained.
He urged affected individuals to remain calm and patient, assuring them that the Ministry is working to ensure timely deployment of all qualified personnel across schools in the country.
