TikTok Back Online in US After Trump Delays Federal Ban
In a surprise move, TikTok announced on Sunday, January 19, 2025, that it was restoring its services in the United States. This decision came after President-elect Donald Trump revealed plans to revive the app’s access in the U.S. when he takes office on Monday.
“As a result of president Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.,” the platform stated in a message to users. This update was a significant development, especially since TikTok had stopped working for U.S. users just a day earlier, ahead of a law that would have shut it down on national security grounds.
The restoration process began after U.S. users reported being able to access TikTok’s website, while the app itself started coming back online with limited services. “In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service,” TikTok said in an earlier statement.
The company also expressed gratitude to Trump for “providing the necessary clarity and assurance to its service providers that they will face no penalties (for) providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive.”

TikTok’s public acknowledgement of Trump’s role in its restoration comes at a critical moment in U.S.-China relations. Trump has stated his intention to impose tariffs on China, while also seeking more direct communication with China’s leader. The situation highlights the complexities of the relationship between the two nations.
The controversy surrounding TikTok stems from concerns over data security and the potential risks associated with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. U.S. officials have warned that Americans’ data could be misused, prompting calls for greater scrutiny of the app. In response, Trump announced plans to “extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, so that a deal can be made to protect US national security.”
Despite its restoration, the app’s long-term viability will depend on its ability to address concerns over data security and national security risks.
