Two Killed, Several Injured in Clashes at Teshie Kpokpoi Sprinkling Ceremony

The annual Kpokpoi Sprinkling Ceremony at Teshie in the Greater Accra Region turned violent on Tuesday, leaving two people dead and several others injured following clashes between rival factions.

The disturbances broke out in the early hours of the morning when groups of youths, who had gathered for the customary jogging and singing that precede the festival, engaged in violent confrontations. Stones were pelted, and sporadic gunshots were fired, forcing security personnel to intervene.

The victims, identified as 30-year-old Eddy Blessing and 27-year-old Patrick Maamah Martey Fio, were pronounced dead on arrival at Lekma Hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds. Several others who sustained injuries were rushed to nearby health facilities, with at least one person reported to be in critical condition.

Although Paramount Chief Gbetsoolo Nii Ashitey Akonfra III managed to perform the traditional rites during a brief period of calm, violence resumed shortly afterwards. Rival supporters aligned with different traditional authorities clashed again, heightening tension in the area.

The bloody incident threw hospitals into disarray as distraught relatives of the victims trooped to emergency wards in search of loved ones. Security forces have since stepped up their presence in the town to prevent further escalation.

The Ledzokuku Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has condemned the violence and assured residents that investigations are underway to identify and prosecute those responsible. The council has also appealed for calm while extending condolences to the bereaved families.

The clashes have cast a shadow over the Homowo festivities in Teshie, a celebration traditionally meant to foster unity, thanksgiving and communal harmony.
