Singapore Names Orchid After President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has been accorded a rare honour in Singapore with the naming of a newly developed orchid hybrid after him. The gesture, a hallmark of Singapore’s diplomatic tradition, took place at the National Orchid Garden, part of the renowned Singapore Botanic Gardens, during the Ghanaian leader’s official state visit.

The orchid, now officially named “Vanda John Dramani Mahama,” was unveiled in a brief ceremony attended by President Mahama and senior Singaporean officials. The naming forms part of Singapore’s “VIP Orchid” programme, under which orchids are named after visiting heads of state, heads of government, and other international dignitaries as a symbol of friendship and diplomatic goodwill.

President Mahama, after touring the Garden and signing the visitors’ book, expressed appreciation for the honour, which he described as a testament to the deepening ties between Ghana and Singapore. Jubilee House, in a statement, also highlighted the significance of the recognition, noting that it reflects both countries’ commitment to fostering stronger bilateral relations.

Beyond the symbolic ceremony, President Mahama held official discussions with Singapore’s President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam. The two leaders exchanged goodwill messages, with Mr. Mahama congratulating Singapore on its 60th independence anniversary and drawing parallels with Ghana’s forthcoming 70th independence celebration in 2027.

He underscored Ghana’s historical ties with Singapore, recalling engagements dating back to the era of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and invited Singaporean businesses to explore opportunities in Ghana under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). President Mahama also highlighted his government’s ongoing economic reforms, citing a reduction in inflation by 13 percent, with expectations of achieving single-digit figures by year-end. He further reiterated Ghana’s commitment to fiscal discipline and strategic investment in agribusiness as part of the national “Reset Agenda.”

The naming of Vanda John Dramani Mahama places the Ghanaian President among an exclusive group of world leaders who have received this honour, reinforcing Singapore’s unique use of horticultural diplomacy as a bridge for international friendship and cultural exchange.
