Wa Court Sentences Former HR Manager of Jirapa Dubai to Life Imprisonment for Murder of CEO

The Wa High Court has handed a landmark life sentence to Elisha Mac Mahama, identified as the primary suspect in the brutal murder of Eric Johnson, the esteemed late proprietor of the Royal Cosy Hills Hotel, affectionately dubbed Jirapa Dubai, in the Upper West Region of Ghana, marking a pivotal moment in a case that had long captivated local attention.

Delivering its decision in a unanimous 7 0 verdict on Wednesday, October 15, the court convicted Mahama, who had previously served as the Human Resource Manager at the hotel company, holding him directly accountable for his involvement in the fatal conspiracy and execution of the crime.

In stark contrast to Mahama’s fate, the court opted to acquit and fully discharge the remaining two defendants: Belinda Miller, a 23 year old woman, and Kweku Kankunbata, aged 56, determining that the evidence did not sufficiently implicate them in the murder plot.

This ruling came at the culmination of an exhaustive trial that stretched on for nearly an entire year, finally providing a measure of resolution and closure to a saga that had deeply unsettled communities across the Upper West Region with its web of intrigue and betrayal.

Following the pronouncement of the verdict, the legal representative for the bereaved Johnson family addressed the media, conveying a profound sense of relief amid ongoing grief, stating, “We may never get Eric Johnson back, but at least justice has been served,” underscoring the bittersweet victory in their pursuit of accountability.

The victim, Eric Johnson, who was 60 years old at the time of his death, met a violent end at the hands of unidentified assailants in the early hours of Sunday, February 11, 2024, specifically before 1:30 am, when intruders breached his residence and his personal vehicle was subsequently driven away by the perpetrator or perpetrators involved.

Details of the attack revealed a calculated intrusion, as the assailant employed a ladder to scale the perimeter wall of Johnson’s property before utilizing a master key to unlock and enter his private bedroom, highlighting the premeditated nature of the assault.

In the ensuing investigation to pierce the veil of mystery shrouding Johnson’s demise, authorities apprehended and detained seven individuals as key persons of interest, subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny in an effort to piece together the full sequence of events leading to the tragedy.

Prosecutors presented compelling forensic evidence, including fingerprints on the ladder and master key traced back to Mahama, alongside digital records from the hotel’s HR system showing his unauthorized access to Johnson’s personal security details. Witness testimonies from hotel staff further painted a picture of Mahama’s growing resentment over denied promotions and financial disputes, motivating his orchestration of the plot. The court rejected defense claims of fabricated evidence, citing chain-of-custody protocols upheld throughout the investigation.

While the acquittals of Miller and Kankunbata sparked brief murmurs of discontent among observers, Miller had been linked romantically to hotel operations, and Kankunbata as a distant associate, the judge emphasized the prosecution’s burden of proof, noting insufficient corroborative links beyond circumstantial associations.

The case’s resolution has prompted calls for enhanced security measures at high-profile establishments in Ghana’s northern regions, with local authorities vowing to review protocols at similar resorts.

Johnson’s legacy as a visionary entrepreneur, who transformed Jirapa into a tourism beacon, endures through the hotel’s continued operations under family stewardship, now fortified by this hard-won justice.
