Chairman Wontumi Freed By EOCO After Meeting Bail Conditions

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been released by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) after fulfilling his bail conditions.
Chairman Wontumi’s legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, had filed a motion at the Accra High Court on May 30, 2024, seeking a review of the GH¢50 million bail imposed by EOCO. However, the motion was withdrawn on June 2, paving the way for his release.
Wontumi was arrested by the Ghana Police Service’s CID on May 27 and transferred to EOCO. He was granted bail with two justified sureties on May 28, and his legal team confirmed that the bail conditions were met by May 30. Despite this, his release was delayed due to the pending motion.
The delay sparked political unrest, with Minority MPs staging a walkout and protesting at EOCO headquarters on May 29. NPP supporters also protested, blocking roads in front of EOCO’s offices. With the motion withdrawn and bail conditions satisfied, EOCO has released Chairman Wontumi.
