ECG Disconnects Ghana Water Company Over GH¢1 Billion Debt

In a bold move to recover mounting debts, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected power supply to the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) over an unpaid electricity bill totaling approximately GH¢1 billion. The disconnection, carried out on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, is part of ECG’s intensified nationwide revenue mobilisation and disconnection exercise targeting indebted public and private institutions.

This latest action highlights the scale of financial strain facing Ghana’s utility sector. According to ECG officials, the GWCL has failed to pay its electricity bills for over seven months, despite continuing full-scale operations in water production and distribution. ECG reportedly issued a 48-hour ultimatum prior to the disconnection, warning of extended power cuts if payments were not made.

Footage cited by Starr FM showed members of the ECG task force expressing frustration at the GWCL site, with one officer criticizing the lack of proper metering and inefficient energy usage practices.

The issue had already caught national attention following a parliamentary briefing in May, during which Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor disclosed that GWCL had not paid “a single cedi” in electricity bills for over half a year.

Following the disconnection at GWCL, ECG’s task force also visited the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), where power was cut due to a GH¢3 million debt.

The developments underscore growing concerns over financial accountability within state-owned enterprises and add further pressure to Ghana’s already strained energy sector. ECG’s ongoing campaign signals a no-exemptions approach as it seeks to recover billions in outstanding payments critical to maintaining national power supply.
