Ghana Launches New Phase in War on Illegal Mining

In a press release issued on October 9, 2024, the Ministry of Information stated that the government would intensify its ongoing “Operation Halt” campaign, which is led by the Ghana Armed Forces. The operation aims to rid Ghana’s river bodies of all mining activities.
The government emphasized that this phase of the operation would be carried out in collaboration with the Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana. This move signals a potential shift towards a more cooperative approach to addressing the issue.
The press release also reiterated the government’s stance that river bodies and forest reserves remain off-limits to mining activities. This declaration reinforces the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s environment.
Fatimatu Abubakar, the Minister of Information, called on all stakeholders to join the fight against illegal mining. She emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing this pressing environmental and economic challenge.
