GMA President Faces Calls for Removal Amidst Nationwide Strike
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is facing internal turmoil as a petition calling for the removal of its president, Dr. Frank Serebour, has been filed. The petition, submitted by Dr. Vishnu Nene Limon Abayateye, a fellow GMA member, alleges that Dr. Serebour’s actions have undermined the association’s principles and brought it into disrepute.
The crisis comes amidst a nationwide strike, with healthcare workers demanding improved working conditions and pay. Dr. Serebour’s decision to instruct GMA members to continue working despite the strike has further fueled tensions within the association.
According to the petition, Dr. Serebour unilaterally announced the GMA’s non-participation in the strike without consulting the national executive council or the general assembly. This decision, the petition argues, violates Article 16 of the association’s constitution and demonstrates a disregard for the concerns of its members.

Moreover, the petition criticizes Dr. Serebour for making public statements that have damaged the GMA’s reputation and made it appear duplicitous. The petitioner has vowed to mobilize the necessary support to remove Dr. Serebour from office at the upcoming annual general assembly meeting.
The crisis within the GMA raises serious questions about the association’s leadership and its ability to represent the interests of its members during a time of significant challenge. As the petition gains momentum, it remains to be seen whether Dr. Serebour will be able to weather the storm and maintain his position as president.
