NPP Opens Nominations for 2026 Presidential Primaries; Aspirants to Pay Over GH₵600,000 in Fees
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially opened nominations for its 2026 presidential primaries, marking the beginning of the process to select a flagbearer for the upcoming general elections. The nomination period began on Monday, July 29, 2025, and will end on Thursday, August 8, 2025. This development is a significant milestone in the party’s internal democratic calendar as it prepares to choose a successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
To participate in the race, presidential aspirants are required to pay a total of GH₵600,000. This includes a GH₵100,000 nomination fee and an additional GH₵500,000 as the filing fee. Payment must be made through a designated Fidelity Bank account, and only bankers’ drafts will be accepted as valid payment methods. Nomination forms are available for collection at the NPP Headquarters in Accra between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.
In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP outlined detailed guidelines for the primaries. The party stressed that the entire process would be conducted in strict accordance with the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and the NPP’s own constitution. The submission of completed nomination forms is scheduled to take place between Thursday, August 29 and Friday, August 30, 2025. A vetting exercise will follow from September 3 to September 5, with the final list of qualified candidates expected to be published by September 7.
If more than five aspirants successfully file to contest, a special electoral college will be held on September 28 to reduce the number of candidates to five. This preliminary vote will precede the main presidential primary election, which is slated for November 8, 2025.
The party has also introduced a 50% rebate on the filing fee for female aspirants, persons with disabilities, and youth under the age of 40. However, these groups will still be required to pay the full GH₵100,000 nomination fee.
As the NPP gears up for what promises to be a competitive internal election, several key party figures and new entrants are expected to declare their intentions. The party has assured members and the general public that the primaries will be conducted in a transparent, peaceful, and credible manner to reflect the values of the NPP.
