President Mahama’s Approval Rating Drops from 73% in July to 67% in September

President John Dramani Mahama’s popularity has taken a slight dip as a new national poll shows his approval rating falling from 73% in July to 67% in September, signaling the end of his post-election honeymoon.

The survey, conducted by Global InfoAnalytics between September 15 and 23, sampled 9,509 registered voters across all 16 regions. Results show that while 67% approve of the president’s performance, 22% disapprove and 11% remain neutral, giving him a net approval rating of +45%.

Despite the decline, Mahama continues to enjoy majority approval in every region, a rare feat for any Ghanaian leader. However, the overall optimism about the country’s direction has also dropped, with 66% of respondents saying Ghana is on the right track, down from 71% in July.

When asked about the government’s overall performance, 18% rated it excellent, 54% said good or very good, 12% average, while 16% described it as poor or very poor. The share of respondents rating government performance poorly increased by five points compared to the July poll.

Public reaction suggests that issues such as illegal mining (galamsey), delayed teacher salaries, and calls for accountability in governance may be influencing the dip. Citizens commenting on social media noted that without urgent action, ratings could decline further.

At a recent #StopGalamseyNow protest, demonstrators urged the president to declare a national war on illegal mining, citing environmental damage, mercury pollution, and the loss of livelihoods in mining communities.

While Mahama’s approval rating remains relatively strong, the six-point drop highlights growing pressure on his administration to deliver. Political analysts note that how the government handles pressing issues; from education to environmental regulation will determine whether the decline stabilizes or accelerates in the coming months.
