U.S. Reverses Visa Restrictions for Ghanaian Nationals
Effective immediately, the United States has lifted the recent visa restrictions on Ghanaian nationals, restoring more flexible visa terms.
The reversal reinstates multiple-entry privileges and extended validity periods for non-immigrant visas. The U.S. Embassy’s post on 𝕏 stated:
The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that the maximum validity periods for all categories of non-immigrant visas for Ghanaians have been restored to their previous lengths. The maximum validity allowed for the B1/B2 visitor visa is again five years, multiple entry. The maximum validity for the F1 student visa is again four years, multiple entry.

This Means:
- B1/B2 Visas (Business and Tourism): Ghanaians can now apply for visas valid for up to five years with multiple entries, facilitating easier travel for professionals, families, and frequent visitors.
- F1 Visas (Student Visas): Students can access visas valid for up to four years with multiple entries, eliminating the need for annual renewals during their studies.
The decision follows months of high-level negotiations to strengthen bilateral relations between Accra and Washington, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for Ghana. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed the reversal during a bilateral meeting at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In his 𝕏 post, he stated:
The US visa restrictions imposed on Ghana have been officially reversed. This good news was delivered by US officials on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and is the result of months of high-level diplomatic negotiations. Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges.

Ablakwa’s statement hints at additional consular privileges, with further details to be clarified through official channels.
Background On The Restrictions
In July 2025, the U.S. imposed visa restrictions on Ghanaian applicants, alongside citizens of Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Nigeria, limiting most non-immigrant visas to three months and a single entry. The measures were introduced due to concerns over high visa overstay rates, particularly among students, as a means to address irregular immigration and compliance issues.
U.S. Embassy Announcement
The U.S. Embassy in Ghana announced the policy change on its official 𝕏 page, confirming the restoration of maximum validity periods for all non-immigrant visa categories, aligning with Ablakwa’s prior announcement.
The lifting of restrictions ends the financial and logistical burdens faced by Ghanaian travelers, simplifying access to education, business, and family engagements in the United States.
