Ghana Black Stars Still Stand a Chance of Qualifying to AFCON 2025

Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have been severely dented following a disappointing loss to Sudan. Despite sitting at just two points from four matches, the Black Stars still have a narrow path to qualification.

After a goalless draw at home, Ghana aimed for a win in their return fixture against Sudan, held in Libya on Tuesday , 15th October, 2024. However, second-half goals by Ahmed Hamed Mahmoud and Mohamed Abdel Raman secured Sudan’s victory, leaving Ghana in third place in the group, with their qualification prospects fading.

Though Otto Addo’s squad is on the brink of elimination, there is still a slim mathematics chance for Black Stars to secure a place at the continental showpiece.

To stand a chance of advancing, Ghana must win their remaining matches—away against Angola and at home against Niger—to reach eight points. But their fate also relies on Sudan losing both their away fixture against Niger and home game against Angola. Anything less than two defeats from Sudan will extinguish Ghana’s chances of advancing to Morocco 2025.

In short, Ghana needs two victories and total lost of Sudan’s last two games to keep their AFCON 2025 hopes alive. Otherwise they’ll face the bitter reality of missing out on Africa’s premier football competition for the first time in over a decade.
