Junior Doctors Suspend Nationwide Strike After Successful Talks with Health Ministry

The Ghana Medical Association’s Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA-GH) has suspended its planned nationwide strike following a successful meeting with officials from the Ministry of Health.

The decision comes after extensive negotiations on Monday, October 6, during which the Ministry assured the doctors that their long-standing concerns would be addressed. The association described the move as a goodwill gesture to give the government time to fulfill its commitments.

In a statement, the Junior Doctors said they had “decided to suspend the intended nationwide strike to allow for the implementation of assurances made during our engagement with the Ministry of Health.” The association added that it would continue to monitor progress closely and would not hesitate to resume industrial action if government fails to honour the agreed timelines.

The planned strike was initially scheduled to protest unresolved welfare and financial issues, including unpaid arrears, conditions of service, and delays in posting of newly trained doctors. According to the JDA-GH, these challenges have greatly affected morale and the quality of healthcare delivery.

Following the agreement, junior doctors across the country have resumed work at various hospitals and health centres. The Health Ministry, in its response, commended the doctors for their decision to put patients first while discussions continue to find lasting solutions to their grievances. The association expressed gratitude to the public, the media, and key stakeholders for their support and understanding throughout the negotiation process. It also urged the government to act swiftly on its commitments to prevent future disruptions to healthcare services.

With the strike officially suspended, healthcare operations across the country are expected to normalize as junior doctors return to duty, bringing relief to patients and the general public.
